Do Floods Cause Earthquakes?

Author: Lance Winslow

Many seismologists and meteorologists have often commented on the proximity of Earthquakes to Flooding Events. Often we notice volcanic activity near times of peak flooding or storm surges. For instance in Mexico and Central America the peak times for Earthquakes and Volcanic Activity is during times of Hurricanes or flooding, where storm surges move water up onto the land or increase the weight on the Continental Shelf due to the increased water. Some studies have shown how high tides are generally coinciding with tremors.

Currently we see volcanic activity in both Washington State and we have severe storms pummeling the coat lines. We are also seeing California get hit with three rather intense storms back to back. These storms will cause significant storm surges, as well as increased weight on the landmass due to the massive flooding especially in Northern California. No one knows for sure when Los Angeles or San Francisco, California or Seattle, Washington for that matter will get their next 8.0 Earthquake, only that all these areas are indeed over do for another one of Mother Natures most horrific demonstrations.

Many psychics and card readers are saying that 2006 will be the year of the Earthquake, yet seismologists need more proof before they buy into psychic phenomena or the water weight on the plate theories for triggering Earthquake, although there are a few from the scientific community who indicate they have defected to the psychic and water theory, by claiming that the change in the resonance of water from the flooding may have something to do with the Earth's natural frequency and this could cause changes in localized vibrational energy, perhaps enough to trigger a seismic event. No matter what the real truth is, it is an interesting hypothesis indeed? We will certainly be hearing more thoughts on this in 2006.
