Enjoy Art

Author: Robert Curtis

It's amazing how everyone sees things so very differently. Take artwork, for example. Everyone interprets a piece of artwork according to their own experience, and according to their own sets of rules and perceptions.

What may seem like a fine detailed and colored portrait to one person may seem like an unbalanced and poorly organized piece to another.

Artwork, like life, is a product of subjective experiences by which we judge things as they appear to be, to us.

Sometimes, the only person who is pleased by a piece of art is the person who actually created it. Passers-by, critics with no real artwork skills, are usually the most derogatory.

Perhaps it is because they can not create, themselves, and can only find solace in criticizing the environment around them.

Let me reiterate, here. Art is, and always will be, SUBJECTIVE. There is no real right or wrong way for one to express themselves, artistically. There is no accurately judged "good" or "bad" forms of artwork, except where the piece is created solely for the purpose of monetary profit, or solely with the object in mind of denigrating something or someone else.

Art without heart is nothing more than splashes of charcoal and color that have been spread across a background devoid of life and feeling.

Artwork, in it's pure form and creation, is an expression of the artist's perception of humanity and nature, an explanation of life and the circumstances that surrounds us.

The next time you step out and enjoy art, in whatever form, be sure to allow for the benefit of the doubt. You may not agree with the message, form, or composition. The skills used in it's expression may be polished or crude. But try to discover for yourself what is being said in the artistic effort.

Try to experience it, perhaps, with the vision and intent of it's creator.

The results may surprise you!
